EHS Honors Standout Underclassmen

EHS Honors Standout Underclassmen

On Tuesday night, Eastchester High School celebrated some of its brightest stars at the annual Underclassman Academic Awards.

The event is held each year to honor those students who have excelled in the classroom, shining a light on the learners who scored the highest averages in classes from Art History to World Language and everything in between. Each department also handed out its own awards to students, lauding them for their effort, creativity, attitude and commitment to improvement.

EHS Principal Chris Welsh commended the high schoolers who took the stage on Tuesday, noting that, despite their tremendous accomplishments to date, there is still infinite room for growth as they continue to develop as both students and individuals.

“What I appreciate about tonight is that it recognizes students at an important stage in their journey,” said Welsh. “Freshmen, sophomores and juniors are still becoming the people they will ultimately be. [They] are still discovering their strengths, refining goals, and figuring out exactly what kind of impact they want to have on the world around them.”

Welsh also reminded the students that their successes should not be viewed as individual feats of merit, but instead are a reflection of the students’ ingenuity and the greater support system in which they operate.

“Your achievements do not belong only to you; behind every student recognized tonight is a network of people who helped make this possible,” he explained. “To our families, thank you for your support, encouragement, patience and belief in your children, whether it was helping them stay organized, listening when they were stressed, celebrating their successes or reminding them to keep pushing forward; your influence matters more than you know.

“To our teachers, counselors and staff, thank you for the care and dedication you bring to this work every single day,” he added. “You challenge students intellectually while also supporting them personally. The success we celebrate tonight is a reflection of the culture you helped to create throughout this building.”
